Dominica is an exotic island located between the French Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe and is the largest Windward Island. It is volcanic in origin and the most mountainous and rugged island in the Caribbean. Dominica is also known as the Water Island due to the vast number of waterfalls scattered on the island. It has a profusion of dense tropical forests, deep valleys, flowing rivers, small geysers and hot springs which make it attractive to nature lovers, botanists, hikers and mountain climbers. In addition the untampered underwater world is absolutely fascinating and is being increasingly explored by keen scuba divers looking for interesting and new locations. Diving in Dominica is truly a great experience. Firstly due to the fact the island is still largely undiscovered by many divers, one does not have to deal with a hoard of other divers underwater. The underwater world offers vertical walls, shallow coral gardens and unusual marine life. There are massive Barrel Sponges, clusters of Tube Sponges, forests of Black Coral as well as large numbers of fish - Flying Gurnards, Orange Ball Anemones, Banded Morays, Bat fish and Electric Rays, all adding up to an experience that goes beyond the norm. One of the interesting dive sites is in Soufriere Bay which was created by a submerged volcano. The diving is done around the lip of the underwater crater. The interior of this wall (inside the crater) drop to 600 feet and some areas have heavy drifts. This however does not mean it is only suitable for experienced divers as and there are many sites that offer gentle drift dives for beginners. Dominica is be the perfect destination for the divers and travelers looking for an experience beyond the sun, fun and beach focus of the Caribbean. Dominica does not even boast its beaches, most are volcanic, black sand and rock. Of course the sun still shines and as with anything, fun lies in the heart of the adventurer.
