Dominica car rental advice

If you choose to use the services of a Dominica car rental company, you should know that usually, travelers obtain a better rate by reserving a car prior to arriving in Dominica .

You should also check if your home driving license can be used and for how long.

Driving in the Dominica can be a rather unique experience and perhaps one not to miss. However, you should drive slowly and with caution. Booking a car from a Dominica car rental company can give you the freedom of movement you need to experience Dominica at your whim.

Other about Dominica

Dominica car rental - the freedom to move

Driving is on the left on narrow, badly paved roads. You'll be hard-pressed to exceed the 20mph speed limit as certain spots have no guardrails whatsoever, even on deadly mountain switchbacks, and many have deep rain gutters alongside. Other routes are nothing more than mud-covered rock (be aware that local car insurance does not cover damage to tyres). None of the roads are lit at night, making it unwise for first-time visitors to cruise around after dark. If you intend to do a lot of island driving, renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle is your best option, even though they cost more (from US$55/day). Aside from a Budget rental office near Canefield Airport), and a courtesy phone inside the terminal that rings to Valley Car Rentals), Dominica's car rental agencies are based in Roseau); they'll meet you at the airport if you've made advance reservations. To drive on the island, you'll need to buy a one-month local driver's licence (US$10) from airport immigration. Most of the car rental agencies are in Roseau. Visiting drivers must be between ages 25 and 65 and have a valid driver's license and at least two years' driving experience. Primary roads are well paved and clearly signposted; remember to drive on the left. If you don't want to drive, taxis are available and can be hired for sightseeing tours. Local buses are cheap and run regularly along the coastal routes between Roseau and both Scotts Head and Portsmouth, although the farther north you go past Canefield the less frequent they become. There are few buses in the evening and none on Sunday on most routes. Car rental agencies provide free pick-up at Canefield Airport and taxis are also available. If you're planning to base yourself in Roseau, try to avoid arriving at Melville Hall; there are no car rentals at this airport, so you'll need to catch a share taxi for the 75-minute haul to the capital.
