Beaches may be the one thing most travelers think of when they consider visiting the tropics, but Dominica is not best known for its shoreline. Still, those seeking the chance to enjoy unusual scenery will love Dominica's black and yellow beaches. The majority of Dominica's beaches are made up of dark gray or jet black volcanic sands, which are unusual but not uncommon throughout the region. However, along the northeastern edge of the island, rarely seen gold or honey-colored sands line a few beaches. Dominica's beaches tend to be somewhat rocky, so sunbathers may want to choose their beaches carefully. Those who choose the island's "best" beaches often visit the northwestern shores around Portsmouth, which is Dominica's second-largest city. Although the city is larger than most on the island, it is hardly metropolitan. You'll find plenty of near-deserted stretches of sand, sun, and waves nearby, particularly in smaller coves. Snorkeling is among the more popular beachfront activities, and equipment rentals and fine snorkeling spots are easy to find on the island. Dominica is known for its snorkeling and diving, and you will find several sites with beautiful underwater views just off the shores. Many beaches are nearby, and so are a number of other activities to entertain you during your stay. Another popular spot for beachgoers is the Calibishie area, also called Pointe Baptiste. This northern region is not particularly close to any major cities, but it isn't far from a small airport, making it fairly easy to reach from the airport at Roseau. Champagne Beach is full of sunshine and great spots for snorkeling and scuba diving. But take heed, this beach isn't ideal for strolling barefoot because of the small pebbles for sand scattered along this volcanic shore. Hampstead Beach is adorned with a beautiful grove of coconut trees and features jewel-like transparent waters. Hodges Beach is located on a lovely sandy bay that is protected by a ring of islands and coral reefs. The reefs make the waters calm and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. L'Anse Noire is among Dominica's most beautiful beaches. L'Anse Tortue is near Calibishie, so you can explore the town as part of your day at the beach. The dark and lovely Mero Beach is located on the west coast of Dominica. The exotic gray sands of Picard Beach are located on the northwest coast of Dominica, and has a backdrop of lush green palm trees. Purple Beach is situated along the north shore and its aquamarine waters are protected by a beautiful coral reef structure.The sands of Scotts Head Beach are located on the southern end of Soufiere Bay and boast clear blue waters which are home to several stunning underwater walls. You will find Soufriere Bay Beach, famous for its rock-studded black sand shores, situated on the on the southwest coast of Dominica. The beach boasts clear blue waters and breathtaking underwater walls, perfect for aquatic exploration. Toucari Beach is a secluded area with coral-covered rocks jutting from its aquamarine waters, and reaching from the beach out to the main reef. The sea waters surrounding the Woodford Hill Bay are calm enough for children to swim in, so bring the entire family to this amazing beach.
